EMC is a substantive contributor to the private sector development agenda in Cambodia and Lao PDR, applying its private sector-led approach to both sectoral and cross-cutting development efforts. Our consultants come from leading consultancy firms (McKinsey & Co, Bain & Company) and financial institutions (JP Morgan, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, International Finance Corporation) but now live and work full time in the countries where we operate, so that development organizations and governments receive international private sector expertise fused with hard-won local knowledge.

We believe that the business analytical approach of the private investor is the most effective means and viewpoint through which to pursue private sector development goals. We research and develop solutions to the most difficult barriers to enterprise investment and growth. We identify market inhibitors and supply constraints and develop innovative strategies to improve performance, including through:

  • advising on Business Enabling Environment (BEE) reforms;
  • development of sector-level strategy, such as through value chain analyses and investment identification;
  • defining reform programs and strategies for cross-cutting issues, such as in trade facilitation;
  • supporting commercialization of current non-private sector business initiatives (NGO businesses, SOEs);
  • developing strategies and programs for development organizations and government;
  • applying our business approach to the management of private sector development initiatives, such as the Export Market Access Fund.

Provincial Investment Profiles. EMC has been contracted by DAI to produce Investment Profiles for six Cambodian provinces for the USAID Cambodia MSME Project. This follows the success of profiles EMC produced in 2008 for six other provinces. The first six profiles can be accessed here.
