Emerging Markets

Mr. Tham joined the Emerging Markets Group Holding Team in April 2008 as a Senior Consultant at EMC with a focus on working with the management team to establish EMI and successfully launch the Cambodia-Laos Development Fund. 

During his tenure in the consulting business, Mr. Tham was actively involved in project work including a study of the SME sector in Lao PDR and a strategic positioning exercise for a Cambodian microfinance institution, among other projects.  

Prior to joining EMC, Mr. Tham worked with the International Finance Corporation, in its Grassroots Business Initiative program, within which his role was to represent the program in Cambodia and to identify, evaluate, establish and monitor Cambodian projects for the program – projects aimed at strengthening and scaling up innovative social enterprises that create sustainable economic opportunities for the poor.

Before joining the IFC, Mr. Tham was part of the team managing a USD 100 million corporate venture capital fund in Singapore. As a portfolio manager for the fund, he was responsible for sourcing, evaluating and structuring investments, and subsequently managing and divesting the fund’s investments, specifically in the internet, information and communications, and software sectors . He began his career with the Monetary Authority of Singapore with the then-named Risk and Technology Department, which was tasked with supervisory inspections of financial institutions to assess the adequacy of their IT and financial risk management. His specific role was in IT and liquidity risk assessments.

Mr. Tham holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation awarded by the CFA Institute, and a BSc (Computer & Information Sciences) from the National University of Singapore.  Mr. Tham is a Singapore national and has lived in Cambodia for 7 years.

Within the EMI team, Mr. Tham will be actively involved in all phases of the investment process, including deal sourcing; appraisal; deal structuring; implementation and divestment activities.
